Welcome To The World Of The Aristocratic Peruvian
By Melanie Mayoh

Peruvians are one of the oldest breeds of cavy, having been established in the British Isles
since the nineteenth century. The strain of peruvian we have in this country is believed to
have come from South America via France

I have been a pasionate breeder of Peruvian Cavies since 1970
It is not necessary to be a livestock expert to appreciate the beauty of the Peruvian
it is without doubt the aristocrat of all cavies.

I keep cavies that have lustrous and silky coats in a rainbow of colours. i am particularly fond of the blonde coat shades
but i have a number of orange / cream and whites, tri colours and lilacs. I breedquality healthy animals which are good tempered,
who enjoy being handled and are delightful to keep

Peruvian Varieties Cavy Club Notes

My first club notes as PVCC club secretary; I hope to keep all our members informed as and when things are happening within our club. 2009 has got off to a good start within lots of interest
in membership both old and new and lots of enthusiasm from members for the future of our club.

By the time these notes are published I hope that all members will have received the new club book, if you have not received a copy would you please let me know as soon as possible. Anyone wishing to join will receive one of these very “collectable” club books. May I again take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped in anyway towards the production of the book or who in any way contributed material to make it such a success. We are calling it a club book not a year book because we do not know how long it will be before the club is able to produce another or whether in this advancing technological age books of this sort regrettably may become something of the past.

Looking forward to club events for 2009 our stock shows are as follows:

29/3/09 Midlands CC Show - Judge Mrs J Rogers

9/5/09 Fareham Specialist Clubs Show – Judge Mr D R Oulton

30/5/09 Bath & West – Judge Mrs M Mahoney

27/6/09 Wyvern – Judge Mr B Emmett

9/8/09 Fareham – Judge Mrs J Phillips

4/10/09 Selston AGM Show – Judge Jayne Crick

I am sure you will agree we have some very good shows to look forward to, I have tried where possible to bring in new judges to our panel to give a little variety and the chance for all panel members to have a chance at officiating at one of our club events. Please give support each and everyone of these shows and judges if it is at all possible.

There was good entry of longhaired pigs being shown at Harrogate in January, congratulations to Mrs June Makinson on winning best nonself u/5 with her Peruvian. By the time these notes are published our first show of the year will have passed with Jane (Mrs Purple) in the hot seat. I am sure everything will have gone well, if as the year goes on you feel there is anything you would like changing about the way we organise our shows then please give me a ring or catch me at a show new ideas are always welcomed. Another month and our second show of the year will be upon us – this is the much heralded Specialist Club Extravaganza Show. Our new chairman – David – will be officiating. I am hoping for a bumper show so that we can hold our heads up high in front of all the other clubs present.

For years the PVCC maintained a club scrap book of which it was very rightly proud. This was a major part of the club’s history but several years ago while the club was going through one of its more tumultuous periods it was lost or the equivalent (destroyed or just plain kept and never returned to the club). From today we are setting up a Peruvian Varieties memorabilia book or file to hopefully record some of our history from the past and has it happens today. The book will be in the form of a photo album which can be regularly updated and added to. If you wish to buy a page for £10 you can have the page as you wish and update as and when you like. It seems the way most clubs move forward is that enthusiastic members keep records and memorabilia for future generations then rather selfishly some one comes along and keeps these important memories and they are lost to the club forever. We must try to ensure in the future this never happens again and future generations of fanciers can look proudly back at our club’s history. Joan as secretary has been enquiring and searching for material and club trophies, I intend to keep up this work, if anyone else is able to help with the search this would be much appreciated.
